The maps below show the current and proposed irrigated area for each reason in 2012 alongside the make-up of irrigated land use in NZ.

In 2015 Environment Canterbury mapped the irrigated area in Canterbury and the area under each irrigation system type. This revealed an irrigated area of 507,468 ha over 50% of this being irrigated by highly efficient centre pivot, lateral move and solid set irrigation systems. A copy of the report can be found here.
