Is your irrigation equipment operating as it should? What improvements could be made?
These are questions that can be technically challenging and costly. To help irrigating farmers navigate to Good Management Practice targets, IrrigationNZ, in partnership with the primary sector, is pleased to be delivering the Irrigation Efficiency Summer programme 2017.
Last summer, 134 irrigating farmers in the Ashburton zone took part in the pilot that investigated on-farm irrigation efficiency. This summer, we are offering the programme in the Selwyn-Waihora zone.
Irrigation system analysis can be done with a simple bucket test. But what do the results mean? Do I need to repair anything or is my system operating close to its potential? Is it my system or how I manage it?
The Irrigation Efficiency summer programme looks at a variety of influencing factors from evenness of application (Distribution Uniformity), application depth and rate, rotation period, pressure and flow, age of system, and maintenance. Results are then reviewed by IrrigationNZ’s Technical Project Manager, and a summary is provided listing key performance issues and any actions that would improve the performance.
